"Gertrude" - My First FJ40 - 1996

I purchased my first FJ40 in 1995. I called her "Gertrude" after the woman who sold her to me. She was Sky Blue. I kept that truck for 15 years and my family and I made many great memories in her. I have a soft spot in my heart for the old Smurf. (see photo above)

Beautiful Low Miles Original

We've all seen beautifully restored classic automobiles. The body comes off, the engine comes out, the interior is redone and every part of the vehicle is evaluated, refurbished or replaced before reassembly. These efforts come with descriptions like "no expense spared" and "better than new". The end results can be visually stunning and financially staggering!

Then there's that "other" genre of classic automobiles. They have the mystique and magic of objects that time has somehow forgotten. You won't hear about the extensive restoration, it hasn't occurred.  Like an enigma that has somehow turned back the hands of time, lovingly cared for or, in some cases, sparingly reserved for special occasions.

This truck is "SPECIAL". You won't find a much more original FJ40. She's a US Spec 1978 Land Cruiser FJ40 from California that is still wearing original paint proudly. Absolutely a survivor!  I offered this FJ40 in 2012 and am pleased to offer her again. A rare opportunity to own an original in remarkable condition with a mere 70,680 miles.

She's back in IA. She is unmolested and a great driver that runs beautifully.  She is one of the cleanest originals I had the pleasure to offer.

Of course she has retained her original 2F engine and 4-speed transmission. All the original smog equipment is present and the truck passed California smog in 2012.

The paint is in very good shape but 42 years has worn it down to primer in a few small areas like the ridges of the hood. There are a precious few flaws. A couple scraps on the passenger side that have gone without repair in favor of not touching the original paint.

This gal has certainly been garaged all of her life when not in use. The interior is fresh and original. The white lettering on the controls show little wear. All the upholstery up front was redone to original specs prior to 2012. She remains in excellent condition, perfect dash pad, new headliner in 2012. (Installed by yours truly)

The 1978 FJ40 is many people's optimal year. She has disc brakes up front, the old school rounded bezel and 4:11 gears for driving off road.  Trucks like these are nearly impossible to come across. UBER-RARE!
