68K-Mile Original - Best of the Best!
I owned this beautiful, US Spec 1981 FJ40 in 2005. It was sold to the owner of a Toyota dealership and spent the next 14 years on the Toyota dealership showroom floor along with other collectible Toyota models. She's a 68K-mile, original paint, essentially rust free 1981 FJ40 with PS & A/C. This is a really stellar example [and one of the best land cruisers I’ve seen]. The current owner, who is based in California, has elevated an already rare and excellent FJ40 to a much higher level with the time, effort, modifications and investment that have gone into the truck.
The owner is detail oriented has chosen only the highest quality parts and accessories (OEM whenever possible). Nearly all of the work has been performed by two well-known Land Cruiser shops in California. All receipts are available for review.
The rebuilt OEM steering box and much of the mechanical work was performed by Georg Esterer at Valley Hybrids in Stockton, CA. Other projects like the forward facing Toyota OEM rear seat were compliments of Gary Kardum at Mudraks in Sonoma, CA. Other recent service includes new plugs, wires, ignition, cap, rotor, carb, hoses, differential, power steering flush, brake flush and other fluids.
In addition, we have a number of high quality products on the truck that were sourced at Proffitt’s Resurrection Land Cruisers, City Racer LLC and others. Best of the best all around. Here’s just some of the other investments made that set this truck apart:
The Vintage Air Gen IV system is the newest and best A/C unit you can put in an FJ40. Even better than OEM from a cooling perspective. This FJ40 had A/C when I owned it back in 2005 but the owner opted to take it out and buy the best. He also installed the new OEM dash pad.
The suspension consists of Alcan custom leaf springs providing ~2.5" lift; 4Plus U-bolt flip kit; 4Plus front shock tower extensions and Bilstein 5125 shocks. Underneath that suspension you will find five Toyo Open Country M55 255/85-16 (~33.5x10) tires wrapped around 16" wheels from City Racer powder coated in gray with OEM hubcaps. The Warn locking hubs have been replaced for higher quality Aisin hubs.
In the cabin you will see all the standard controls and gauges plus the ARB front and rear lockers with compressor controls mounted discretely in ash tray opening on the dashboard, separate air pressure gauge for the air tank is yet another quality upgrade. The ExtremeAir compressor, (custom mounted in the engine bay) operates the ARB lockers as well as an air tank underneath the vehicle. Quick release air chucks discretely mounted on front and rear of vehicle.
Most people would just put any decent forward facing seat in an FJ40 but the owner is not most people. The rear OEM Toyota forward facing seat is the optimal choice but it’s not easy to find or inexpensive. It was never offered in the US so he had to purchase and import it from Australia at a cost of $3700. Then all the seats were re-crafted to match in high grade marine vinyl. We still have the original rear jump seats as an option. Between the front seats rests a Proffitt’s custom locking center console integrated with the rear heater (original center console is also available as an option). Audio is provided by a dash mounted RetroSound Bluetooth radio/head unit (original radio also available as an option) and Proffitt’s rear speaker grills that were powder coated in factory gray. The floor mats are all stock and in very good condition with the two section that form the seat surrounds being new-old-stock.
Up front we have a new Warn 8274 Anniversary model winch mounted in a custom Proffitt’s OEM replica FJ40 winch bumper. Thicker, stronger, and designed for the 8274. The winch is flanked by OEM Toyota fog lamps and an OME fog light switch on the dashboard from City Racer, LLC. and the windshield mounted side view mirrors (original door mounted mirrors available.) In back we have new OEM bumperettes, rear bumper mounted side step, etc.
The owner has receipts for all the outsourced work and products.
