The Fabled 7,700 mile Krumsick Cruiser
We've all seen beautifully restored classic automobiles. The body comes off, the engine comes out, the interior is redone and every part of the vehicle is evaluated, refurbished or replaced before reassembly. These efforts come with descriptions like "no expense spared" and "better than new". The end results can be visually stunning and financially staggering!
Then there's that "other" genre of classic automobiles. They have the mystique and magic of objects that time has somehow forgotten. You won't hear about the extensive restoration, it hasn't occurred. Like an enigma that has somehow turned back the hands of time, lovingly cared for or, in some cases, sparingly reserved for special occasions.
With under seventy eight hundred miles, the incredible Krumsick Cruiser is the epitome of the “Elusive Survivor”. This Land Cruiser FJ40 arrived from Japan in Portland, OR early in 1980 and was delivered to Krumsick Motors in Washington, Missouri where she was purchased on Feb 11th, 1980 by W.C. Hidritch. This was one of the last vehicles sold before the 80 year old dealership closed it’s doors.
Mr. Hidritch was reported to be somewhat of a car collector. He purchased the Land Cruiser for his wife to drive. She had no experience with manual transmissions and after about four blocks, she came to the realization that she preferred an automatic transmission. Mr Hidritch passed on February 7th, 1997 at the age of 56 and the Land Cruiser, which had only 6400 miles at the time was sold to her 2nd owner who kept her until 2023 and added about 1300 miles.
There’s not much to explain regarding the condition of this FJ40, other than “it’s like new”. It looks like new, it runs and drives like new, it even smells like new. It has factory power steering, AM Radio and a rear heater. It’s been driven about 100 miles per year for the last several years.
The 2nd owner stored the original wheels, tires and hubcaps and put FJ60 wheels and new tires on her but other than this. she remains 100% original right down to the chalk marks on the frame. She retains the original window sticker, owners manual, original invoice, toolkit, jack, jack rods, inspection light and everything that originally came with her. This is very likely the finest, lowest miles and rarest original FJ40 on the planet.
