FJ40 Engine Numbers

Updated: Mar 31, 2019

Toyota didn't include engine numbers on the build plate or VIN plate. So how do you know if your FJ40 engine is the original engine. Well, technically you don't unless it's a V8 or something obviously swapped. Many FJ40's have had engine transplants.

I've added a page to www.lcnation.com under the RESOURCES tab that lists a range of FJ40 engine numbers for 1975 thru 1984. The data was compiled from members of www.ih8mud.com and compiled by subzali, a forum member.

It's a quick way to see if your engine number appears to be within the correct range of numbers for your model year. This is the best available data we have but it is not 100% complete. There are some production dates, particularly in the 80's where we simple don't have any data points that have been submitted.

If you have a 1980 FJ40 produced after February, we could use your engine number.

If you have a 1981 FJ40 produced in January, we could use your engine number.

If you have a 1982 FJ40 produced after October, we could use your engine number.

If you have a 1983 FJ40 produced before April, or after September we could use your engine number.

You will find the thread to add your submissions here - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/2f-serial-number-info.82256/
